April 2008

Dear ,

Well, we had our AGM Saturday and I can tell you I am pumped for the year to come - in a nutshell, we have members who are interested in coordinating plein aire sessions, field trips to various locations including Ballet Kelowna, and new ideas for workshops from Opus and fellow members. We will also be applying to public galleries in and around the interior of BC, and perhaps beyond.....

On a sad note, we said goodbye to Laura Widmer, who kept us on track for the last three years as Treasurer. Laura, you did an incredible amount of work, and we appreciate it very much! I'm not sure how many folks know but you were  instrumental in getting Livessence incorporated as a non-profit. You will be missed on the board, but maybe now we can see you in the drawing sessions. :)

Welcome to Tina Siddiqui our new Vice President, and Bonnie Sheppard and Rob Zeer are going to share duties as Sessions Coordinator. Welcome back to Margaret Gleig as Secretary extraordinaire!

We met our City of Kelowna Arts Foundation rep Sue Harper, who is also a freelance writer. Read Sue's article in the latest Okanagan Arts magazine. Welcome aboard Sue!

Keep reading for more information on what's coming up this year. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to write me or any of the executive. See you at our next show, Latitudes!
Sincerely,
Julia

Memory Book
Is someone interested?

We have had a very active three years, and likely to get moreso in the coming years. Is there anyone who would be interested in putting together a Livessence Memory Book?

This would consist of photos of past shows, newspaper articles, etc. If you are, please contact any of the Livessence Executive.

Life and Arts -
Drawing in the Atrium

Life and Arts Festival Logo

Did you know of the free drawing sessions in the Atrium on May 10 and 11 from 1 to 3 pm? There will be a draped model, currently Megan (backup Donnalee) paid for by the Life and Arts Festival.

It is such a blast- if you have never done these sessions do sign up and come, because we really do educate the public in terms of what goes on behind our closed doors.

After April 30th, the signup list will be open to KSS, RSS, MBS and CATO.

People stop and watch and are fascinated. Many go along the mezzanine and watch us drawing from above.

It's a cool experience, so send me an email to get your name on the list, space is becoming limited.

Workshops coming UP
June Saturdays

We need a Workshops Coordinator. If you are interested, please contact me - we have dates and the room already booked, so it is just a matter of choosing which, and taking names. Please consider helping out! Some ideas that were tossed around today were to have a few workshops focused on:
  • mediums - acrylic gels, mediums and varnishes, and another on oils - linseed/walnut oils, galkyd/galkyd lite etc.
  • a collage workshop,
  • a workshop exploring graphite powders etc,
  • what to do with your drawing after the session (integrating the drawing in to a painting complete with background etc)
  • taking photos of your work for website and printing,
  • a full day of model painting, and
  • decorating our Livessence tshirts.
If any of these ideas are interesting to you, please contact me.

Photographs and Digital Images
Here is the plan....

At the AGM, we discussed images for the website and for print. I am not sure how many people know this, but the requirements for each are very different.

The images required for print are of very high resolution/size and the images required for the web are much smaller - have you ever tried to print out an image from a website and it was all blurry and pixelated (jagged)? That is because for the web, the resolution (the quality of the image) is fairly loose, and the file size fairly small, in order for the image to be downloaded very quickly. Some artist websites take FOREVER to load, this is likely because the image is a very high resolution/ file size is large. For my own website, I use a standard image measurement rule of 500 pixels wide - or 500 pixels longest side. The actual size of the file can be anywhere from 50K to 200K.

For printing, the resolution should be fairly large - about 1500 to 3000 pixels longest side, which means that the size of these files would be a megabyte to two or three. These types of files are murder to send through email though, and can fill up a person's inbox very quickly.

So here is the plan to save time, and be efficient with your images: take the photo on the largest to second largest setting on your camera - then in an imaging software like photoshop or paint or if you have vista, vista has a built in imaging adjustment capability - size it down to the numbers I've suggested, or what you know works for you. You take one photo, but get two results. One can be emailed or put on the web and the other you have available for printing.

Now where do you send these? For Livessence, our new webmaster Russ Dionne is happy to receive these files for the member gallery on our website. Please send them to russdionne@gmail.com. (Have you seen our member gallery?) and the other, the large file, please send an email to Angela Hansen, our graphic designer amhansen@telus.net, and let her know you have them, and how to send them to her. These are the images that get put on our promotional material.

Because we update our promotional material and website fairly often, please do not hesitate to send as above, for any new work you would like to show off.

If you have any questions, please do contact Russ or Ang.

What do you think about field trips?

Some members thought that it would be very cool to do field trips involving models and members. Here are some of the ideas as well as contact information in case you would like to get involved:

  • Visit Ballet Kelowna during their training days at their studio on Leckie Road. This needs to get set up in advance, contact Rebekah Wilkinson at rjwilkin@telus.net
  • Painting at Gyro Beach - contact Rob Zeer at 863-3500
  • Painting day or weekend at Saint Andrews, contact Tina Siddiqui at 317-8659 or taeessuxmal@yahoo.com
  • Pleine aire at Gallaghers area contact Margaret Gleig at margaret@margaretgleig.com
  •  Do you have any other things you would like to do? Contact Rob Zeer with ideas.
When we discussed "what types of models/drawing sessions interest you", the following were suggested. Some we are already doing, but others are intriguing - for those of you who weren't able to make it to the meeting, what do you think?
  • Semidraped
  • Double models (would be a slightly more expensive drawing session)
  • Ballet Kelowna
  • Culturally different people
  • Connections from Canada World Youth
  • Photo session
Exhibitions
What you need to know

Latitudes: A "Small Art" show is coming up starting May 1st. If you are interested or able to help out in setting up or taking down, please contact Ralf Rohrlack at ralf@greystokedesign.com. Setup is scheduled for Thursday May 1 from 9 am to 11 am. Drop off for your work is Thursday May 1 from 11 am to about 1 pm. If you are unable to make it during this time, please make alternate arrangements with Ralf. Pick up for the work will be May 31st anytime after noon to about 8 pm.

If you have work hanging on Livessence Boulevard, please consider changing the work every month or so. It keeps the exhibition fresh and exciting, and many people come down the Boulevard every day and our work gets lots of attention!

The calendar will be updated shortly with dates coming up, if you have anything you would like to add to the calendar (workshops you are running, or shows you are in), please contact any of the Executive.
